Once only made up of forest and mountains, this ancient area of land changed the day that First Nations wildlife and people arrived. Once an extremely wild area, the area transformed by the outcome of many events, booming culture and modernization. To this day, Vancouver’s natural beauty that surrounds a business thriving core still captures the hearts of many visitors. This great city came to life the day explorers discovered all of its beauty and resources. Let’s take a walk through the historic timeline of Vancouver, British Columbia.

1778 Captain James Cook arrived. Many native groups inhabited in this area.

1791 The city of Vancouver began to evolve when explorers began looking for the Northwest Passage through to Northern America. Captain George Vancouver from England then took his ship called the HMS Discovery right into the Burrard Inlet.

1858 Gold was found within the Fraser River in 1858 and then within a few weeks time, over 29,000 Americans made their way over for their share of the gold.

1867 A funny man by the name of ‘Gassy Jack’ opened the first saloon to provide drinks to the forestry workers on the coast of the Burrard Inlet. Gastown was then built up around this popular saloon.

1886 Now that the city had over 1000 people, Granville decided to call it the City of Vancouver. M.A Mclean was the first mayor of Vancouver.

1887 - 1898 The Canadian Pacific Rails first ever train arrived in the City of Vancouver. The very first Granville Street Bridge was completed and then another bridge was built later in 1909.

1915 UBC, known as the University of British Columbia opens for the very first time.

1931 – 1939 The famous Hotel Vancouver landmark was built.
