The North Shore Mountains are a compass point in the city. As a visitor, you'll look to the North Shore for both the beautiful scenery and a sense of direction. In winter, three ski hills (from west to east they are Cypress Mountain, Grouse Mountain, and Mount Seymour) are all within a 30-minute drive of downtown. The slopes also offer snowshoeing. Grouse Mountain is particularly family-friendly with tobogganing, ice-skating, sleigh rides, and Christmas-time visits with Santa.
In summer, most visitors take the gondola up Grouse Mountain for the view (fewer hike up the steep and serious Grouse Grind trail). But in the surrounding parks and mountain terrain there are also hiking trails, wildlife watching opportunities, suspension bridges, and mountain biking.
