Dating back to the early 20th century, English Bay was known as the base for the first lifeguard in Vancouver, Joe Fortes. He taught many Vancouver residents how to swim and took care of the beaches with his watchful eye. There are always boats anchored in the bay on a sunny day and you are sure to enjoy the people watching. Visitors can also watch as the cruise ships pass through in the distance and head to the Port of Vancouver.

Located in the West End, English Bay is one of the most popular swimming, sunbathing and sunset watching places in Vancouver. There are many beaches that face English Bay such as third, second and sunset beach. On the South side of English Bay you will find Jericho Beach, Kitsilano Beach and Spanish Banks.

The seawall travels all the way down English bay and onto renowned Stanley Park. This well known area is loved by many and remains a beautiful tourist attraction for all visiting families and tourists. You will find loads of bicyclists, walkers, runners, joggers and rollerbladers. There are many events held in English Bay such as the HSBC Celebration of Light, the annual Vancouver Pride Parade and Polar Beach Swim.

Take the family for the day and have some fun exploring the area, dining at the Boathouse Restaurant, or suntanning on the beach. In the winter English Bay is just as beautiful with its sunsets and when it gets covered with snow.
